Three
of Chile's best left points are being threatened by massive development plans
along a remote stretch of forested coast known as Rancho Topocalma, including
what is often cosidered Chile's best wave, Puertecillo. The ranch was recently
purchased by one of Chile's largest private electric companies, and plans were
submitted for a total of three seperate settlements on the property, with housing
for 50,000 inhabitants. There are also plans for a hotel and two marinas. One
marina is planned for Punta Topocalma, and the other for Puertecillo, which
means that Chile could lose some of its best surf in one fell swoop.
Rancho Topocalma has been
frequented by surfers for over two decades, and visiting surfers have been
permitted to camp on the beaches after obtaining permits in Santiago. Entry
to the Ranch is restricted, but on most good days, 10-15 surfers are camped
on the point. Puertecillo has long been considered one of the country's best
waves. It breaks along a sand bottom and is protected from the prevailing
southwesterly winds, making it very valuable to the Chilean surfer. Chile's
surfers, however, are few in number, and need your help.
Although this is not
in Europe we are all responsible for the world's surfing zones which in
most cases are natural resources so you must all think hard and write
positively about this type of action from governments. Here at Oceanfever.net
we feel stronger than most about this type of poor government behaviour,
it is irresponsible for our children and the generations still to be born
to our unique and wonderful planet.
Here's how to help:
Send an e-mail, written
in your own words, in which you state your opposition to the proposed development.
Be sure to mention that your are opposed to the construction of a marina at
Puertecillo, and be sure to sign your name, state your occupation and where
you're from. The email will go to Nelson Avila, member of Chilean Congress.
