MAUI SURFER GIRLS

The mission of Maui Surfer Girls is to provide adolescent girls from the ages of 12-17 with a safe and fun environment to gain both technical skills and self confidence through the sport of surfing and other educational opportunities.  This is the way forward for our sport and here at Oceanfever.net we feel this epitomizes the development with the sport of surfing.

Through the power of gaining new skills such as surfing, girls often develop healthy self-esteem and view their bodies as functional and embodying feelings of joy and freedom. Maui Surfer Girls also believes that with the seeds of healthy role models, girls will grow into self confident and successful woman.  That's want we all want at the end of the day..... don't you reckon!

So who's the team behind this great idea, well....

Dustin Tester
She stood up on her first surfboard, a single fin 5'10, at eight years old, when her dad taught her how to surf at Puamana beach on Maui.  From that day onward, Dustin developed her love for the ocean and every ocean activity Maui could offer her.   At twenty, Dustin was sponsored by a skim boarding company in Santa Cruz California, Rip-Tide.  She was the only girl competing against the guys in her summer skim boarding competitions.  At twenty-six she graduated from Prescott College with a degree in Adventure Education emphasizing in wilderness therapy.

For the past four years, she has worked as an Outward Bound instructor, a climbing instructor for various high school outdoor education programs in California, and a surf instructor for Nancy Emerson School of Surfing.  For the past two summers, she has been a climbing instructor and program head at an all girls camp in North Carolina called Camp Green Cove.  This is where she saw the incredible learning curve through a supportive all female learning environment.  She is currently a team rider for Girls on the Move, an Outward Bound project that will inspire and celebrate girls around the country through a cross country cycling expedition.  She is excited to bridge her skills as an experiential, outdoor educator into her passion for the sport of surfing and building self confidence in girls.
