Nequay Reef - Cornwall

Dr Kerry Black of ASR Ltd is the leader of the team responsible for studies to examine the feasibility of a surfing reef at Newquay. The studies have examined reef design, environmental impact and construction issues.

"A reef designed to develop world-class surfing in Newquay will turn the surfers' dreams into reality, while other studies have shown that the reef will significantly benefit the town's economy", said Dr Black today.

"The Artifical Surf Reef does not make swell, but ASRs change the form of the waves when they break", he said.

The Surfing

· Left and right-hand arms cause the waves to peel down the reef in a fashion that is ideal for surfing
· 150-200 m surfing rides on each arm
· "Superb" quality ranking of 7-8 on a world scale of 1-10 (©ASR Ltd), i.e. challenging top surfers
· Different style of surfing wave on the left and right
· The left is fast and "down-the-line"
· The right is variable with tubing sections and round cut back areas
· Large underwater focusing sections double the wave height on the take-off and protect the beach by allowing wave energy to be absorbed on the reef
· Additional surfing breaks will develop as a series of peaks along the shoreline
· Suitable for all forms of surf craft including wind surfers, wave jumpers and kite sailors
· Provides new habitat for reef organisms
· Diving and snorkeling in small surf conditions
