During the World
Grommet surf event in January 01, this youngster blew away the 14 year old
division with smashing moves out of the lip that makes old codgers like me
so jealous...
Ry originates from
the north coast of Western Australia and thanks to his old man, he's had plenty
of surfing experience. His dad swims deep for abalone shells, and due to this
reason he has surfed together with his old man on many offshore islands since
he could first walk.
Former top professional Barton Lynch stated
that if this youngster could have a few winters on the North Shore of the
Hawaiian chain he would be totally insane. This is a very high compliment
from a former world champion and maybe we are seeing the new world champion
of the future. However we must not be premature as Australia has produced
a number of good surfers in the juniors but for some reason they do not all
come through but Ry seems different to the surfers before him who have failed.
Over the past 12 months, Ry has been making
a lot of people sit up and take notice. He won the Quiksilver air contest
in WA a few months ago, pocketing a cool $6000 - a lot of money for a grommet
Incidentally, Ry made the cover of Surfing
World, the first time a Grom had made the cover since Tom Carroll. Food for
thought maybe of what is ahead for this teenager.
